10 Horror Movie Victims Who Were Actually The Villain
1. Marie - High Tension (2003)
This piece of French Extremity cinema tells the story of Marie and Alex. These two lifelong friends hope for a quiet weekend in the French countryside. Their plans are shattered however when their homestead is targeted by a burly, motiveless killer.
On paper, High Tension sounds like fairly standard slasher fare, and for the most part it is. The majority of the runtime is taken up with extraordinarily gory kills and a seemingly endless series of chase scenes with Marie as a quick witted heroine.
Cecile De France delivers a powerhouse performance as Marie, a young woman determined to rescue her lifelong friend. We're constantly reminded of the pursuing killer's brutality, so as an audience we root for her to succeed.
Then the film does the unthinkable: a series of flashbacks reveal that the heroic Marie has been the killer all along. There is no grimy truck driver... Marie is revealed as a delusional woman, infatuated with her best friend. So much so that she's willing to murder anyone in the way of her romantic intentions.
To say High Tension pulls the rug from under the audience is an understatement. Given the reveal the film divided opinion, some feeling it was ingenious, while others claiming it nonsensical.
Whatever your thoughts, one can't deny that this shocking twist ensured High Tension is always remembered.
