The antagonist in Roman Polanski's The Ninth Gate is wealthy collector Boris Balkan (Frank Langella), who ultimately plots to summon the Devil for his own nefarious ends.

At the end of the movie, he performs a ritual which apparently grants him immunity from all physical harm, and in an attempt to prove this in front of skeptical protagonist Dean Corso (Johnny Depp), douses himself in gasoline and sets himself on fire.

For a few moments Balkan is seemingly euphoric at his apparent invulnerability, but as the flames engulf him, he screams out in pain, the flames indeed burning him to death like they would anyone else.

Corso, feeling pity on Balkan, then decides to put him out of his misery by shooting him dead, and that's that.

If you want to test that an immortality ritual actually worked, maybe just cut your finger with a knife or step on a piece of Lego first and work your way up from there?

What a moron, but it makes for one hell of a hilarious climax, that's for sure.
