Kim Jee-woon's I Saw the Devil is a seriously messed up movie, revolving around an intelligence agent, Kim Soo-hyun (Lee), who seeks revenge on Jang Kyung-chul (Choi Min-sik), the serial killer who brutally murdered his fiancee.

And Kyung-chul evidently didn't expect to encounter someone capable of outdoing him on the deranged front, but a vengeance-obsessed Soo-hyun certainly gets there in the end.

Throughout the film, Soo-hyun repeatedly captures and releases the killer in order to prolong his torment, which in turn allows him to commit more sexual assaults and murders. Not a great look.

But the pièce de résistance comes at film's end, when Soo-hyun tortures Kyung-chul in his own home, placing him in a makeshift guillotine. At that moment, Kyung-chul's estranged son and elderly parents arrive, and opening the front door triggers the guillotine, decapitating him in front of them.

Though Soo-hyun achieves precisely what he set out to do, the ending doesn't suggest even a slither of catharsis for him, rather the opposite, that in his quest for revenge he's become something unconscionably ugly.
