10 Horror Movie Villains Who Were... Kind Of Right

7: The Creature From The Black Lagoon (1954) - The Creature

Saviour or Monster? What images does the title, The Creature from the Black Lagoon, inspire? Despite being one of Universal’s quintessential classic monsters, the titular aquatic creature is anything but.

When an archaeological expedition, intent on finding a rare fossil, venture into the Amazon, they get more than they bargained for. An amphibious humanoid creature stumbles upon the expedition’s camp and curiously attempts to investigate. What the creature is greeted with, however, is aggression and violence from the camp’s scientists, who are horrified at its appearance.

In response, the creature kills the two scientists who find him.The creature then watches the remainder of the scientists aboard a ship and falls in love with Kay, a woman in the group. When Kay gets caught in one of the lines of the ship, the creature rescues her. How is he repaid? By being caged and attacked several more times, of course.

Eventually, the scientists resign to leaving the amphibious creature alone, abandoning their mission in the process. Humans being terrible isn’t anything new in horror movies, but it is a rare trait for those we are supposed to be rooting for.

The Creature from the Black Lagoon did not ask for any violence, but had it thrust upon him by invaders. Where is the justice in that?
