Often mistaken for his Billy the Doll mascot he sends in place of actually bothering to turn up, the Jigsaw killer - aka John Kramer - has a modus operandi a little different to the other fellas on this list. Punishing those that waste their lives by putting them at the centre of sadistic traps, Kramer takes the dregs of society and attempts to churn them out shiny and new again by testing their will to live.
Named the Jigsaw killer for the little puzzle-shaped piece of flesh he takes from those that fails, his reasoning is that they lack a vital piece of human nature: the ultimate survival instinct. Kramer only makes traps that are ‘beatable’ to a certain degree, even if this turns out not to be the case for most that involuntarily take part - offering gruesome compromises for those that really want to make it out alive.
Technically, Kramer hasn’t killed anyone, and his hands remain blood-free. As well as training apprentices and leaving traps after his death, he simply put people in situations that they’ve failed to get out of, essentially killing themselves in the process. Designing the traps, kidnapping strangers, attaching them to these death devices and then detonating them from afar seems somewhat enough of an argument to claim the kills are his, though…
