10 Horror Movies Actors Wanted You To Hate
7. Charlize Theron - Monster (2003)
Long before Patty Jenkins was having her Wonder Woman 3 script assassinated by James Gunn (and during a time when Gunn himself was churning out Scooby Doos like nobody's business), she was making something with a much harder edge: Monster.
Based on real-life serial killer Aileen Wuornos, a prostitute who murdered seven of her clients, Monster sees Charlize Theron take on the film's lead role with a physically transformative performance that scored her the Academy Award for Best Actress.
Theron transformed herself beyond recognition to play Wuornos, imbuing her hate and disgust for the character into her portrayal and physicality, and imploring viewers to do the same. The character is slobbish, slovenly and ugly in every way imaginable, marrying her inner turmoil with her actions and outer appearance. Rather than the "hot lesbian movie" financiers thought they were paying for, Theron went out of her way to make the character as unappealing as possible, ensuring Jenkins' vision of this woman was played out on screen, against the glamorous Hollywood status quo.
