10 Horror Movies Audiences Walked Out On
6. Mother!
Director Darren Aronofsky has never shied away from difficult subjects.
The Wrestler and Black Swan deal with suffering in the name of art, The Whale is about self-harm through overeating, and Noah is a warning about what happens when you let an arthouse filmmaker try and do a blockbuster.
Perhaps his most disturbing picture is Mother, or "mother!" as it's sometimes written. The piece stars Jennifer Lawrence as the eponymous Mother, the wife and inspiration of a struggling poet (Javier Bardem).
It's difficult to explain what happens in this movie, because it gets very strange very quickly. The characters don't have names - Mother, Him, and Man are all we get - and the film takes an especially dark turn when the lead couple's baby is torn apart and eaten by a ravenous crowd.
The film is not short on violence throughout, including scenes of people getting their head smashed through glass and Lawrence's character being savagely attacked by the mob. It divided critics and caused fans to stop watching and look up the plot synopsis online.
Although, it's just as weird and horrifying when it's written down. At least you don't see a baby die on Wikipedia.
