10 Horror Movies Audiences Walked Out On

3. The Texas Chainsaw Massacre

Terrifier 2
Vortex Releasing

In case you didn't know, this movie is about a guy who goes on a massacre, with a chainsaw, in Texas. There. Now you know.

Inspired by the crimes of Ed Gein, the original Texas Chainsaw Massacre introduced fans to Leatherface and his weapon of choice in 1974. It's about a group of friends who fall foul of a family of evil murderous cannibals. As opposed to all those nice murderous cannibals you get.

The movie is regarded as a classic these days and has spawned countless sequels, reboots, and spin-offs with varying degrees of success. But the film that started the franchise almost never got seen at all.

It was banned in several countries upon its release, including in the UK and Australia. Countries that permitted it might have regretted that decision when they received reports of people leaving cinemas part way through showings.

The Texas Chainsaw Massacre is an incredibly violent film, even by today's standards. People are still unsettled by the gory detail of the murders and the use of human remains as furniture and trinkets, but at least they can be creeped out in high-definition now as opposed to on some shoddy bootlegged VHS.
