10 Horror Movies Critics Were WAY Too Harsh On
6. Anaconda
The pitch meeting for this film must've been hilarious. "You want to make a film about a thirty foot snake with Ice Cube, J-Lo and John Voight?" The finished product is B-movie heaven, complete with ropey special effects and a script that makes The Phantom Menace read like Chaucer.
With only two stars from Empire, David Eimer had this to say: "The movie provides a fair number of laughs, even if you can't help wondering how many of them were actually intentional... only the most gullible viewers will be convinced."
This film has so much to wrap your serpentine body around, including attacks from wild boars, wasps in the throat and bravely committed performances from other big names like Eric Stoltz and Owen Wilson.
As the depleted survivors make their way to a waterfall down river in an attempt to capture the titular snake, they reverse the boat to untangle it from the reeds. Those with sharp eyes will spot the waterfall in the background flowing up - a clever trick from a budget savvy editor who obviously realised there was no footage for the shot.
Yet the stand out moment has to be Voight and a world class creepy leer, directed at Lopez as she wipes the sweat from her neck, all from the man who made Midnight Cowboy. Anaconda is guilty pleasure at its very best.
