10 Horror Movies Even More Disturbing Than You Thought
5. The Real-Life Scenario Would've Been Even Worse - 30 Days Of Night
David Slade's overlooked action-horror flick 30 Days of Night takes place in the Alaskan town of Barrow (now known as Utqiaġvik), where a band of vampires attempt to feast just as the town enters 30 days of polar night - that is, 30 days without sunlight, giving them free reign to cause a massacre.
It's a terrific setup for a movie, no doubt, yet both the film and its comic book source material actually ended up underselling how horrific the situation would've been in real life.
As it turns out, Barrow/Utqiaġvik's period of night is much, much longer than depicted in the film. Because the town sits 300 miles north of the Arctic circle, polar periods may last as long as 66 days.
Needless to say, outlasting the vampires for over two months sounds downright impossible, and that's perhaps why the source comic pared it down to a more manageable and believable 30 days.
