10 Horror Movies Even More Disturbing Than You Thought
4. One Day Of Purging, 364 Days Of Trauma - The Purge
The Purge touts one of the most tantalisingly messed-up premises of any horror film from the last decade - what if America became enough of a right-wing dystopia that the government literally allowed its civilians to "let off steam" by making all crime legal for one night of the year?
Throughout the series, the focus is generally placed on citizens murdering one another for kicks, but rather glosses over the fact that there would inevitably also be a glut of horrific non-fatal crimes.
There's also a strange presumption that things basically go back to normal after Purge Night, and that once the Purge-inclined have extracted their pound of flesh - in whatever form that may take - everything's hunky-dory for the next 364 days.
But of course, trauma is a thing, and beyond the pile of bodies left in the wake of Purge Night, the United States would find itself in a mental health crisis as the survivors struggle to come to terms with their own friends and family being killed, and with a government that will continue to endorse the yearly tradition itself.
