10 Horror Movies Even More Disturbing Than You Thought
3. Earth Is Even More Doomed Than You Think - Piranha (1978)
1978's original Piranha may be a comedy-horror, but it nevertheless has some genuine bite (sorry) with regard to its gnarly death scenes, as the resort town of Lost River Lake is set upon by a fleet of genetically engineered piranha.
Despite the heroes' efforts, the film ends with the implication that some of the piranha indeed escaped to the ocean, leaving them free to travel around the world and cause chaos on a global scale.
But the situation is actually even more dire than the inevitability of humans en masse being attacked by flesh-eating piranha.
Allowing genetically engineered piranhas capable of withstanding treacherous environmental conditions to enter the free ocean will likely result in outright ecological disaster, with the delicately balanced marine ecosystem being disrupted by the ravenous critters.
Given that every living thing on Earth is reliant on marine life to regulate oxygen levels, the piranha and their inevitable offspring could theoretically devour it at an unsustainable rate, in turn leading to mass extinction of ocean life and accelerated global warming, threatening Earth itself.
This would obviously be a worst-case scenario, but the issue is ultimately far more concerning than mere humankind being attacked by piranha all over the world. It is an issue which would affect every single creature on the planet.
