8. Dewey's Lousy Death - Scream (2022)
2022's fifth Scream film did the one thing many fans never expected: it killed off one of the slasher series' original protagonists.
Fan favourite Dewey Riley (David Arquette) bites it in the movie, and though there's nothing inherently wrong with killing one of the O.G. heroes, the execution sure left a lot to be desired.
Though Dewey gets a great arc in the first half of Scream 2022, presented here as something of a grizzled, depressed gunslinger who returns to duty to take down the new Ghostface, his death ultimately requires him to pick up the idiot ball with reckless abandon.
During his confrontation with Ghostface in the hospital, Dewey makes a few head-smacking mistakes - not shooting Ghostface in the head, going back alone to the finish the job, and then letting himself be distracted by his phone, giving the killer a moment to recover, get the drop on him, and murder him in cold blood.
The scene casts a dark pall over the rest of the movie, but not in the manner the filmmakers likely intended. Rather than merely mourning Dewey's demise, many fans were left infuriated that he went out in such a needlessly idiotic way.
