You read that right.

In a move that the actor himself has since admitted that he regrets, the great Nicolas Cage did very much chow down on a bug for real during the making of a movie.

This scene from Robert Bierman's horror black comedy Vampire's Kiss involved Cage's Peter Loew, a literary agent who believes he's turning into a blood-sucking creature, grabbing a cockroach and shoving it in his mouth. Not stopping there, though, he then proceeds to eat the insect for real.

There was no fake bug and Cage didn't suddenly spit out the creepy crawly at the end of the take. He fully committed to eating the little thing, and has since noted (via Yahoo! Entertainment) that he would not be doing anything like that ever again.

Weirdly enough, while Cage managed to avoid eating another insect during the making of his latest vampire film, Renfield, his co-star Nicholas Hoult wasn't so lucky - he ended up eating potato bugs, cockroaches, and crickets. Lovely.
