10 Horror Movies That Are All Too Real

Arguably one of the most stomach-churning and notorious horror films ever created, Ruggero Deodato’s Cannibal Holocaust is an uncompromisingly violent and twisted outing that sees an anthropologist (Robert Herman) head into a remote part of the Amazon in search of a missing film crew. However, on finding their remains and film, he watches it to discover the heinous atrocities the crew afflicted on the native tribe.

The film was so repulsive that a mere 10 days after its premiere Deodata was charged with obscenity and even murder after a French magazine claimed some of the gruesome deaths were real.

While many of the gruesome acts depicted onscreen were faked, plenty of the cruelty that viewers witness is completely genuine. Sequences of a turtle being decapitated and disembowelled as well as other animals being killed actually happened.

Likewise, Deodato was needlessly cruel to his cast and the tribe during production. He screamed at one cast member until she agreed to comply with a sex scene they were uncomfortable with; another actor’s ordeal on set was so bad that they developed severe anxiety; and Deodato would even force some (unpaid) natives into a burning hut without any safety regulations in place.
