10 Horror Movies That Are Way Better When You Already Know The Twist
7. The Others
The Others centres around Grace - a mother who has difficulty caring for her children, due to their hypersensitivity to sunlight. When Grace finds the children too overwhelming, she hires three servants to assist her.
Shortly after the servants' arrive, Grace notices strange goings-ons in her home. When she sees her daughter, Anne, take on the physical appearance of an elderly woman, she's adamant dark spirits are trying to possess her children.
But in the final scene, Grace learns a terrible truth. It turns out that the "others" in the house aren't ghosts - Grace's family are. After Grace killed her children and herself, their spirits lingered in their former home ever since. When a new family moved in, Grace and her children began haunting them, although unintentionally.
Now, the "they were dead all along" revelation isn't particularly original. (The Sixth Sense pulled off that twist two years prior.)
But once you know the truth, you interpret every scene differently. When you watch the possession scene again, you realise Anne is taking control of the woman's body, not the other way around. Instead of living in fear, you realise Grace is living in shame and denial. Although The Others isn't as scary the second time, it's a lot more heart-wrenching.
