10 Horror Movies That Are Way Better When You Already Know The Twist
6. A Tale Of Two Sisters
In A Tale of Two Sisters, Soo-mi is left traumatised by her mother's suicide, encouraging her family to send her to a psychiatric institution. After she returns home, she's greeted by her sister, Sun-yeon, her distant father, Moo-hyeon, and her callous stepmother, Eun-joo.
Due to Eun-joo's cruel behaviour, Soo-mi becomes convinced she intends to harm her and her sister. But when Soo-mi tells her father that Sun-yeon is in danger, he says her sister died the same day as her mother.
At first, this revelation seems to make sense. After all, we never see the father speak to Sun-yeon at any point. When he talks to Soo-mi, the camera often cuts Sun-yeon off entirely, emphasising she's not really there.
But hold on. We see Eun-joo interact with her stepdaughter many times. How is this possible if Sun-yeon is dead?
Well, it turns out Eun-joo is a figment of Soo-mi's imagination. Although Eun-joo is real, this version is an alternative personality of Soo-mi. Because Soo-mi blames her stepmother for her mother's death, her fractured mind created an alter that resembles a tyrannical Eun-joo.
Once you realise Soo-mi has had two extra personalities the entire time, you feel obligated to watch A Tale of Two Sisters once more, wondering how these scenes actually played out, rather than how Soo-mi perceived them.
