10 Horror Movies That Aren’t As Bad As Everyone Says
7. Reeker
This one is a real shame, as the lukewarm reviews which met director Dave Payne’s 2005 film Reeker may be the reason the filmmaker hasn't gone on to do much more than a lone sequel to this horror in the decade and a half since its release.
And it's a damn shame, as this surprisingly existential desert-set slasher is a wildly underrated piece of teen horror. Equal parts thoughtful and visceral, the film follows a set of interchangeable teens on their way to a remote rave who are stranded in the wilderness and find themselves besieged by the titular monster.
Largely unseen for much of the runtime, the eponymous threat is heralded by his grotesque stench. The film wrings plenty of tension and gross-out moments galore from this set up.
But, unlike a lot of mid 2000's horror, there's more than gore on display here.
The film's rug pull final twist didn't work for a lot of critics, but for our money it's one of the most unexpected and inventive uses of an age-old storytelling device in a long time, and one which elevates this one to a must-watch.
