10 Horror Movies That Aren’t As Bad As Everyone Says

4. Slice

Burying The Ex
A24

Released in 2018, Slice was the feature debut of Chance the Rapper's music video director Austin Vesely. A goofy horror comedy, the film is imbued with all the positives and negatives most viewers would expect to see from a music video turned feature director.

So it's a stylized and slick effort despite a low budget and features some stand out sequences, but the over-stuffed story barely hangs together and the characters are paper thin.

Still, this one didn't deserve to be ignored and dismissed by critics upon release.

Beneath its knotty plot which combines werewolves, ghosts, witches, and a delivery guy killer, this film has a canny, clever satire of gentrification at its heart. There's witty social commentary galore and some hilarious comic relief from Paul Scheer.

Meanwhile, Chance the Rapper proves to be a likeable screen presence in his brief but pivotal role, whilst Deadpool 2's Zazie Beetz is likeable as ever as the deadpan heroine determined to uncover the film's labyrinthine mystery.

Imperfect as it may be, this incisive horror comedy deserved more kudos for its invention, even if it is over-ambitious.

Cathal Gunning hasn't written a bio just yet, but if they had... it would appear here.
