Maybe Switchblade Romance director Alexandre Aja was just always meant to work in comedy.
After all, the twist at the end of that otherwise terrifying 2003 horror is pretty hilarious.
And whilst the director's grim re-do of Wes Craven's survival horror The Hills Have Eyes was a torture porn-y ordeal, 2010's Pirahna 3D saw Aja use his remaking skills for some good dumb fun.
Stripping away the ant-war satire of Gremlins director Joe Dante’s 1978 original makes this remake a sillier, gorier blast. But whilst the film may be less socially conscious than the original, it's a likeable horror comedy that benefits from a stellar ensemble cast including Ving Rhames, Jerry O'Connell, and Adam Scott.
With a slew of gory set pieces which see unlikeable spring breakers dispatched by boat motors as well as the titular threats, this horror comedy is well worth a watch for monster movie fans and didn't deserve the frosty reception critics gave it.
And that's without even mentioning Jaws star Richard Dreyfuss' early cameo and an appearance by Hostel helmer Eli Roth as an obnoxious DJ who is soon turned to fish food.
