10 Horror Movies That Break The Genre

2. Zodiac

Mulholland Drive
Warner Bros.

After making a lot of hits at the beginning of his career (with films like Se7en, Fight Club and The Game), David Fincher turned his attention to prestige drama in 2007 with Zodiac.

The film focuses on a trio of characters - cartoonist Robert Graysmith (Jake Gyllenhaal), police officer Dave Toschi (Mark Ruffalo), and journalist Paul Avery (Robert Downey Jr.), who all become obsessed with the Zodiac Killer, a notorious serial killer that began a reign of terror during the late 1960s.

The film is far from a horror film, centring more on themes of obsession, as we see Graysmith, Toschi, and Avery all become haunted by the Zodiac killer and his identity. However, saying that, the film does have some truly terrifying scenes, especially when we see the Zodiac killer do away with his victims.

In particular, there is one truly terrifying sequence in the film in which Graysmith talks to Bob Vaughn in hope of finding the Zodiac killer, however, begins to suspect that all isn't as it seems. From the cinematography and editing alone, this scene is truly chilling, and is probably scarier than most modern horror films in just this one segment.

Cameron Mcmurdie hasn't written a bio just yet, but if they had... it would appear here.
