10 Horror Movies That Deserve A Sequel (But Will Never Get One)
7. Behind The Mask: The Rise of Leslie Vernon
With so many found-footage horrors pulling the same shtick, Behind the Mask: The Rise of Leslie Vernon felt like a breath of fresh air. In this "documentary," a film crew follows the titular killer while he explains the rules, tropes, and meticulous planning behind his chosen victims. Behind the Mask shifts into a traditional horror movie when Leslie initiates his murder spree, turning the self-aware mockumentary into a tense, conventional slasher.
Not only was it a great idea to see the film dissect the working craft of a traditional slasher psycho, but there are so many avenues this property can go down. Although the story seemingly concluded with Leslie dying, the post-credits sequence shows his corpse rising from the autopsy table. Despite being a gag ending, it'd be cool to see Leslie return as a supernatural force, playing up the cliches of horror sequels where the antagonist is reborn stronger than ever.
Director Scott Glosserman toyed with a sequel for a decade, but ultimately felt his ideas had become outdated. Rather than tainting the original with an inferior follow-up, Glosserman decided to pull the plug.
