10 Horror Movies That Deserve A Sequel (But Will Never Get One)
4. World War Z
After going massively over-budget and redoing the entire third act, World War Z was expected to be an epic flop. But after the zombie blockbuster grossed over $500 million, Paramount prepared to turn the adaptation of Max Brooks' 2006 novel into a trilogy.
Although the ins and outs of the plot aren't known, Brad Pitt's Gerry Lane would return in World War Z 2, which would be set in China. And when David Fincher was signed on to direct, it looked like it was only a matter of time before the sequel was rolled into theatres.
Unfortunately, everything was torpedoed when the studio realised the Chinese government has a strict policy on depicting the undead in media. While everybody scrambled to cook up another viable story, Fincher left to work on his TV series, Mindhunter. Even though the project had spent months in pre-production and was in the middle of principal photography, it was ultimately abandoned.
It's a shame the trilogy never panned out, since the sequels could've explored the political and social consequences of the zombie war. Better still, an episodic structure akin to the source material would've been a smart way to differentiate the follow-ups from the original.
