10 Horror Movies That Flopped Hard In 2022

6. Texas Chainsaw Massacre

The Invitation
Netflix

This long-running slasher franchise's ninth sequel picks up almost half a century after Tobe Hooper's 1974 masterpiece. Its story centres on young urbanites from other cities moving to the Texas town of Harlow with the intention of gentrifying the neighbourhood by flipping run-down residences.

The film's chaotic production, which included the departure of initial directors Ryan and Andy Tohill soon after filming began, raised concerns about its future, especially after it was revealed that it will be released only on Netflix rather than in cinemas.

The film was eventually completed, and according to Netflix’s own statistics, Texas Chainsaw Massacre outperformed expectations in terms of the audience during its initial few weeks.

But the people who actually saw the movie probably wouldn’t say that it exceeded their expectations. At Rotten Tomatoes, 31% of the critics gave the movie a favourable rating, although the audience score was even lower than that, reaching a mere 26%.

While some praised it for its gratuitous use of violence and silly entertainment value, detractors also pointed out its clumsy efforts at social satire and lack of endearing characters.
