A masterclass in slow-burn horror, Ari Aster’s Hereditary sees Annie (a sensational Toni Collette) plunged into despair following the death of her domineering mother and the sudden loss of her young daughter, Charlie (Millie Shapiro), in a harrowing accident.

From here, this film explores the disintegrating relationship between the surviving family members as the immense grief takes its toll. In between explosive arguments between Annie and her teenage son Peter, though, nightmarish happenings suggest that something far more insidious is at play.

As the prevailing sense of uneasiness continues to tighten its grip on audiences, it’s revealed that the family have been manipulated by a satanic cult this entire time the cult aiming to use them as sacrifices in a ritual to resurrect a demon.

It's in the pitch-perfect finale where things eventually come to a frantic boiling point. Aster doesn't hold anything back, with horrific imagery, grotesque violence, and spine-chilling scares driving the terror forward at an unrelenting pace, as sole survivor Peter is assailed by the cult in the family home.

Aided by an ethereally haunting score, the cult's chilling chants conclude Hereditary in bone-chilling fashion. Its brutal intensity makes this one of the most terrifying endings in modern cinema.
