10 Horror Movies That Go Totally Insane At The End
8. The Ritual (2017)
Helmed by David Bruckner, The Ritual follows a group of four friends as they embark on a hiking holiday in a Swedish forest in memory of their friend who was murdered during a robbery gone wrong. With Luke (Rafe Spall) being the only one to witness the killing, he’s left suffering with guilt for not being able to save his fallen pal.
Things take a sinister turn after the group spend a night in a creepy cabin. Not only do they become terrorised by unspeakable nightmares, they’re also stalked by something hidden within the trees.
It’s with the reveal of a cult in the flick’s final act where events start to ramp up exponentially, as it turns out the creature is a god-like being from Norse mythology which grants its followers eternal life in exchange for sacrifices. Following a spectacular shot that shows the creature in all its terrifying glory, the climax erupts into a heart-pounding pursuit as the monster chases Luke through a manifestation of his trauma.
Ending on a satisfyingly cathartic note with Luke finally overcoming his fear of what happened that terrible day, The Ritual is one of the best monster movies in recent years.
