10 Horror Movies That Never Left You

1. Martyrs

Even though aliens, monsters, demons, and ghosts get hearts racing and teeth chattering, there's one entity far, far scarier.

People. History has repeatedly shown that humans are capable of committing the most unspeakable atrocities.

And few movies demonstrates this fact more than Pascal Laugier's Martyrs. The psychological horror opens with a young girl, Lucie, escaping from a slaughterhouse where she was daily tortured. After befriending another abused girl called Anna, the pair promises to punish the people who made Lucie's life a living hell.

Going into Martyrs, viewers expect to be horrified by the themes of child abuse and torture. (And yes, those qualities are explored in spades.)

However, nobody is ready for how unbearably depressing Martyrs is. There are few things more soul-destroying than watching people perform inconceivable deeds on the innocent for what they believe to be the greater good. And just as it look like things can't get any darker, Martyrs opens up a whole new dimension of terror.

Even though the film is phenomenal, no one watches it without feeling violated. Much like the lead characters, Martyrs bombards viewers with unimaginable horror, leaving them feeling deadened and empty.
