10 Horror Movies That Only Make Sense At The End

8. Fallen

Fallen Denzel Washington
Warner Bros.

Fallen is one underrated mind-screw of a movie, beginning with a scene from the tail-end of the story, where an on-the-brink-of-death Detective John Hobbes (Denzel Washington) runs through a forest as his voiceover tells the audience, "I want to tell you about the time I almost died."

The clear implication is that we're going to see the rest of the scene play out again at the end of the movie with Hobbes presumably triumphing over the demonic force he battles throughout the film, Azazel.

Except, that's not quite the case.

Fallen's ending sees Hobbes willingly allow Azazel to possess him, but Hobbes has also fatally poisoned himself, which combined with the remote wilderness locale of the showdown should ensure that Azazel is unable to leap to another host before perishing.

However, at this moment Denzel's voiceover returns, revealing that we were listening to Azazel all along, not Hobbes, just as a cat comes across Hobbes' corpse. This in turn allows Azazel to possess the animal and continue his reign of mayhem.

Easy though it'd be for such a wild last-minute reveal to come off as excessively manipulative, it places a huge WTF shock value cherry on top of the entire tale.
