6. Cube

In Vincenzo Natali's sci-fi mind-bender, several strangers wake up in a cubic maze, composed of booby-trapped rooms. Though the group try to navigate through the gargantuan labyrinth, the majority meet with a terrible fate.

However, nobody suffers quite like the first guy. Alderson wakes up alone and confused in one of the cube's many identical rooms. Befuddled by his surroundings, he cautiously moves into an adjacent room through a hatch, with no sign of immediate danger.

After taking a single step, a whooshing sound is heard, causing Alderson to literally stop dead in his tracks. As a bloody square pattern appears across Alderson's body, it's apparent he's been shredded by a grid-shaped razor wire. His body falls apart in cube-shaped chunks (which is fitting) just before the film's title drops.

Although opening a movie with an extravagant death can come across as gimmicky or forced, Alderson's abrupt demise feels necessary since it establishes how deadly and mysterious this environment is.

Even though nothing is revealed about Alderson, nor does he utter a word, the way he dies is sure to stay with viewers for a while.
