10 Horror Movies That Sound Terrible (But Are Actually Great)

5. Laid To Rest

There haven't been a whole lot of great new slasher movies during the 2000s, but Laid to Rest is one of the few that's pretty damn good. This 2009 film introduces a killer named ChromeSkull who, as his name suggests, wears a chrome mask in the shape of a skull. What makes him unique is that he actually tapes all of his murders and sends the footage to the police. He's that cocky.

Let's be honest: if you're watching a slasher flick, all you probably want is a cool villain and interesting kills, and Laid to Rest delivers both of those. The death scenes are spectacular and incredibly gory, and although most just involve someone being stabbed with ChromeSkull's knife, the film still manages to make that consistently shocking. There's a moment when a girl is stabbed in the face, but as the knife is being pulled out, it sticks in her skin for a few seconds like in a slab of meat. In another sequence, ChromeSkull stabs a guy and pulls the knife straight up, slicing his entire face clean off.

In other words, this is a freaking nasty movie, and the kills feel like a modern continuation of Friday the 13th. Laid to Rest is a slasher from an inexperienced director with a 5.3 on IMDB, yet it might just surprise you.
