10 Horror Movies That Sound Terrible (But Are Actually Great)
4. The Den
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9R8L6D7nnxoThe found footage genre had become rather played out by 2013, and then this movie came along called The Den. The tagline is "online is the scene of the #crime," and the premise is that it's an entire film that takes place over Chat Roulette. Okay, that sounds absolutely terrible.
Actually, it's an entertaining and mostly effective film with some pretty original scares. The movie follows Elizabeth, a student doing a research project where she's going to chat with as many people as possible on a Chat Roulette clone called "The Den." It plays with our natural fear over who we're really talking to online, and after chatting with a string of weirdos, Elizabeth is matched with a person who live streams a murder to her.
It's a super creepy sequence, and because talking with people over a computer is something we can all relate to, seeing horrifying imagery through that lense is scary as hell. There are also a lot of moments of dramatic irony where the audience realizes something that Elizabeth doesn't, like that her computer has been hacked. The film does have its fair share of narrative contrivances, and you'll constantly be asking why she's carrying around her laptop to film things, but if you can get passed those cliches, The Den is an interesting online horror story that rivals Unfriended.
