10 Horror Movies That Sound Terrible (But Are Actually Great)

6. Friday The 13th (2009)

Friday the 13th
Warner Bros. Pictures

Speaking of Jason, when Friday the 13th was rebooted in 2009 by New Line, just about everyone was ready to declare it a soulless cash crab and call it a day. While the Nightmare on Elm Street remake was indeed a huge disappointment, the Friday the 13th remake is shockingly good, worthy of being included with the rest of the franchise.

The most refreshing thing about this remake is the fact that it doesn't just recreate the original Friday the 13th. That was the big issue with A Nightmare on Elm Street (2010), which just took all the original's best scenes but did them less effectively. Instead, Friday the 13th tells a new story with new characters, while still paying tribute to what came before in its opening sequences featuring the death of Pamela.

The movie also has one of the greatest cold opens ever. It sets up a group of teens who go to Camp Crystal Lake, and so you're assuming these are our protagonists. After spending 20 minutes with them, Jason kills every single character and the title "Friday the 13th" comes up. What other movie flat out tricks you into thinking you know who the leads are before instantly killing all of them in one fell swoop? It seemed impossible for a Friday the 13th to surprise anymore, but this reboot does just that.
