10 Horror Movies That Totally Confused You

Even if you sort of figure out the plot of a film, you can still be left confused when you reach the end if you can’t figure out the meaning of it all. It’s true that some films don’t have any deeper meaning, but arty, allegorical type flicks like this one just have to have a meaning, otherwise what’s the point, right?

Vivarium basically follows a couple as they find themselves trapped in a never-ending maze of suburban houses, raising a humanoid alien child against their will. As the child gets older, he gets stronger and they get weaker. Eventually, they die and the (now adult) child buries them in the yard and gets a job at an estate agent.

The message probably isn’t that estate agents and landlords are parasitic aliens, but I like the suggestion. That’s exactly the bit that makes the movie confusing though, that everything is a mere suggestion. We get a bit of a mini-doc about a cuckoo’s lifestyle at the start that might point us in the right direction but even then, what are you saying? That all babies are parasites that eventually kill their parents?

Whatever the message is, I’m not smart enough to figure it out.
