10 Horror Movies That Totally Screwed Characters

6. Dick Hallorann - The Shining

Dick Hallorann (Scatman Crothers) is one of most memorable and iconic characters in Stanley Kubrick's masterful horror classic The Shining, the Overlook Hotel's cook who bonds with Danny Torrance (Danny Lloyd) over their shared supernatural abilities.

But tragically, Hallorann ends up murdered totally out of nowhere in the film's third act by an insane Jack Torrance (Jack Nicholson), who hacks him up with an axe when he arrives to try and rescue Jack's family.

It feels like a cheap shot solely to shuffle Hallorann out of the way for a finale focused strictly on the Torrances, and was all the more unfair to the character given that he actually survives in Stephen King's novel and even helps the family escape.

Thankfully we got to see Dick again in spirit form in the recent sequel Doctor Sleep - now played by Carl Lumbly - even if his death-by-axe in Kubrick's movie ultimately felt like a double disservice.
