3. Ben - Night Of The Living Dead

Night of the Living Dead's Ben (Duane Jones) is a classic example of a horror movie protagonist who does absolutely nothing wrong and still pays the mortal price regardless.

Throughout the movie, Ben is shown to be firm but level-headed, and by far the most sensible of all the characters we encounter during the film's zombie apocalypse.

But in a bout of disturbing irony, Ben survives the zombie onslaught only to be shot dead by a passing redneck the next morning, who mistakes him for a "ghoul" and pops one in his noggin without hesitation.

Ben went through all that turmoil only to be felled by racism, effectively. It's obviously the entire dramatic point of the movie, and a brilliant one for sure, but also absolutely infuriating.
