10 Horror Movies That Use Your Imagination Against You

8. Rosemary's Baby (1968)

The Conjuring
Paramount Pictures

A chilling and timeless classic, Rosemary’s Baby has cemented itself as a masterpiece of the genre.

Based on the novel of the same name by Ira Levin, the plot sees Rosemary (Mia Farrow) and her husband Guy (John Cassavetes) move into a new apartment in the hopes of starting a family. Dismissing the building’s notorious past, the couple soon befriend their overly friendly elderly neighbours the Castevets (Ruth Gordon and Sidney Blackmer), who take a particular interest in Rosemary when she falls pregnant.

As her pregnancy continues, Rosemary gradually loses control of her own life as the Castevets, her doctor, and even her own husband dictates what she can and cannot do. Becoming convinced that those closest to her are up to something nefarious, Rosemary starts to worry for her and her unborn child’s lives.

It isn’t until the finale that their true plans are uncovered. It turns out that the Castevets really were Satanists and used Rosemary to birth the antichrist.

Horrified at the truth, Rosemary rushes to the cradle her child is lying in before gasping in horror, asking what they’ve “done to its eyes”.

We’re left to wonder what caused her intense reaction.
