10 Horror Movies That Weirdly Made Characters Look Like Idiots

7. Dr. James Atherton - Arachnophobia

I Know What You Did Last Summer
Buena Vista Pictures

While most of the victims in Arachnophobia can't really be blamed for failing to appreciate how dangerous the species of spiders invading their town are, there's absolutely one person who should acutely get it - Dr. James Atherton (Julian Sands).

Dr. Atherton is a British entomologist who first discovers the spiders in Venezuela and has a greater understanding of their nature than anyone else in the movie.

However, despite knowing all this and seeing a growing pile of corpses in his midst, Atherton nevertheless investigates the spider nest in Dr. Ross Jennings' (Jeff Daniels) farm without any protective gear or assistance whatsoever.

And so, his idiotic overconfidence ends up costing him his life moments later when he's attacked and fatally bitten by one of the large spiders, his corpse later discovered by Ross.

You can argue that the man's curiosity got the better of him, but even so, knowing that creatures in this barn have straight-up killed people and just going in anyway was mesmerisingly stupid.
