10 Horror Movies That Were Way Weirder Than Advertised

7. Smile

Army Of The Dead
Paramount Pictures

Trailers for Smile marked the film out as a weird offering from the get-go. However, the film's debut soon revealed that viewers had seen nothing yet. Smile follows the tale of Rose Cotter, a therapist who begins to believe she is being haunted by a supernatural entity after witnessing one of her patients commit suicide in front of her - said patient grins at Rose like a Cheshire Cat before slitting her own throat.

Smile may have marketed itself as a supernatural fright flick, but evolves into a legitimate psychological horror by the time the movie draws to a close. With the film's exploration of weighty subject matter in the vein of trauma and mental illness, proceedings take on an ineffably strange aura - the viewer genuinely doesn't know if the creature is real or whether Rose is legitimately losing her mind.

Topping matters off, the true appearance of the film's antagonistic force isn't actually revealed until the film's climactic sequences. As they stare into the monster's appalling visage - a skinless, grinning face resembling a Russian nesting doll - viewers who thought they were prepared for this offering's weirdness levels likely find themselves rethinking matters in a hurry.
