Escape Room centres around six survivors of various tragedies who are chosen by a secret organisation called Minos to take part in a lethal contest. During the trials and tribulations, four members of the group lose their lives. After Zoey and Ben complete the Escape Room, they murder the Gamesmaster and vow to destroy Minos.

Escape Room is a perfect example of a movie where the lead character is the final girl for one reason - because she's the lead character. Being an expert in quantum science, there's no question Zoey is a genius. But throughout the games, she doesn't demonstrate a major advantage over the other participants.

In fact, Deborah Ann Woll's character, Amanda, proves to be more adaptable, mentally and physically. With her backstory as a PTSD-riddled soldier, viewers are WAY more invested in her survival than Zoey's. Considering Amanda sacrifices her life to save her teammates, it's obvious she would've been a more fitting protagonist.

When Zoey seemingly dies at one point, it looks like the film finally grew some balls, since it's going against the mould. However, Zoey's "death" turns out to be a fake-out, allowing Escape Room to maintain the final girl trope.
