10 Horror Movies Where The Villain Survives
2. Wolf Creek
In the classic ‘tourism gone wrong’ scenario, Wolf Creek sees a trio of backpackers (Liz, Kristy and Ben) get into a sticky situation when their car breaks down at Wolf Creek National Park.
A seemingly helpful man named Mick offers to tow them to get their car fixed, after which he proceeds to drug and torture them.
It’s a pretty awful tale: there’s sexual assault and increasingly gross violence including Liz getting her spinal cord severed and Ben being literally crucified. After all this it would be a good pay-off to see everyone survive and defeat their attacker. Alas, this is not what happens.
Mick kills both women but leaves Ben in a mine shaft, where he is able to escape into the Australian outback and be picked up by some nice Swedish tourists who, unlike the last ‘helper’, actually don’t want to murder him.
Title cards at the end of the film tell us that the remains of the women were never found and that after months in police custody, Ben is finally cleared of suspicion for their disappearances. At no point does anyone even mention Mick might get some kind of karma, and the film ends with us seeing him literally walk off into the sunset. Oof.
