10 Horror Movies Where You Don't See The Monster Until The End

These starring creatures don't get the spotlight until just before the curtain falls.

The Woman
The Collective

Though not every horror movie needs to have a monster, the ones that do definitely need to have a good one, otherwise the entire project is rendered completely null and void.

A lot of time and effort goes into the designs of the various ghouls and ghosts that dominate the horror landscape, so it stands to reason that filmmakers would want to show off their gruesome creations for as long as possible.

Not always, though.

As shown by many great scary movies over the years, sometimes the best way to build intrigue in a monster is to let the audience imagine for themselves what it looks like. Plenty of horrors don't show their monsters at all, whilst some leave it until the very last minute to pull back the curtain.

The following ten evil beasties all show up towards the end of their respective movies, either for plot reasons or just because the director wanted to keep their audience on tenterhooks for as long as possible. Such a bold decision could have gone horribly wrong, but these monsters were all a case of saving the best till last.

10. The Void

The Woman
D Films

Drawing inspiration from horror icon (and hella problematic man) H. P. Lovecraft, 2016's The Void follows a group of victims who must survive an encounter in an abandoned hospital with a deranged cult and the strange monsters they command.

The big hook of The Void is that when victims are killed, they transform into the hideous creatures that, in true Lovecraftian fashion, have a troubling number of tentacles. It's up to the goodies to evade these horrifying creations without succumbing to their wiggly ways.

In charge of the cult is Dr. Powell, a man driven mad by the loss of his daughter, Sarah. In an attempt to revive his dead child, Powell implants a mutated version of her into one of his victims, Maggie, who makes quite the entrance.

Towards the climax of the film, Maggie "gives birth" when the so-called "Sarah-Creature" explodes from her torso, ripping her open in a shower of flesh and gore. Whilst there are other monsters present throughout The Void, none are quite as frightening as this one, and the remaining survivors must now face an even more terrifying evil.
