10 Horror Movies Where You Never See The Villain
3. The Witch
Robert Eggers' delirious directorial debut is a masterful exercise in slow-burning atmospheric storytelling, as a 1630s New England family finds themselves assailed by malevolent supernatural forces.
The Witch's primary antagonist is none other than Black Phillip, effectively Satan, who spends the overwhelming majority of the film taking the unassuming form of a black billy goat.
Only in the final moments of the film does Black Phillip finally transform into a human, yet given that we only see some out-of-focus legs and a black hand touch protagonist Thomasin's (Anya Taylor-Joy) shoulder, we still have no idea at all what he really looks like.
Eggers gives us just enough of a hint to set an appropriately creepy mood, but the finer details are sensibly left up to the imagination.
