10 Horror Movies With The Worst Monster Reveal
5. The Darkseekers - I Am Legend
I Am Legend, a virus has infected most of humanity, transforming them into vampiric hemocytes called Darkseekers.
One survivor, a virologist called Robert Neville, performs experiments in a desolate Manhattan, hoping to find a cure.
Even though we don't see the Darkseekers for the first-half, you're constantly reminded how dangerous they are. Although Neville tries to be clinical while making his reports, you can always sense fear in his voice when he describes the mutants' behaviour. In early scenes, we hear them scuttling around and screaming, reminding Neville (and the viewers) they are always nearby.
But when you finally see the Darkseekers, everyone has the same thought - "Why are they CGI?" This thought is usually followed by "Why does the CGI look so bad?"
What makes the Darkseekers' design more disappointing is how they could've looked way better. Director, Francis Lawrence, originally intended the monsters to be brought to life by using actors wearing prosthetics. But after seeing the screen-test, Lawrence decided CGI was a better avenue.
Despite the director's concerns, pretty much everyone thinks the prosthetic Darkseekers look vastly superior to their CGI counterparts, which makes you wonder why Lawrence swapped them in the first place.
