Personality disorders and hallucinations are a nearly too-common trope in horror films, which ultimately leads to misunderstanding and demonising of those who actually suffer with these issues when done badly. However in A Tale of Two Sisters, the beauty and delicately crafted story treats the issue with due respect.

The film follows Su-Mi and her sister Su-Yeon as they return to their family home to be reunited with their father and stepmother – the latter of whom they aren’t particularly keen on. It’s a horror film, so naturally things start to go south and supernatural for the family. A bloody sack with what’s presumably a dead body inside, dead pet birds and ghosts are some of the highlights.

Whilst the personality disorder revealed at the end of the film is not particularly surprising, it’s the fact that Su-Mi’s alternate persona is the cold stepmother makes it stand out. All along we were led to believe that her sister was the other personality, but it’s a clever and disturbing twist on a twist within a very good film.
