10 Horror Movies You Knew Would Be Good After The First 10 Minutes
4. A Quiet Place
A Quiet Place takes place in a world where most of human civilisation has been destroyed by aliens who harbour hypersensitive hearing. Knowing the slightest sound could get them killed, our lead characters, the Abbot family, get through each day by living in silence.
Although A Quiet Place has a brilliant premise, it's hard to convey it in a movie which... you know... has nobody talking. However, the first scene perfectly demonstrates what kind of life these people are living. More importantly, it demonstrates what happens to anyone who doesn't take precautions.
After the Abbot family find supplies in a store, the boy, Beau, tries to take a toy shuttle from a shelf. His father, Lee, stops him, knowing the toy makes noise. Beau's sister, Regan, feels bad for him and so, secretly gives Beau the shuttle.
As the family make their way home, Beau turns on the toy, causing it to blare incessantly. Lee sprints towards his son as quickly as he could, while his wife stares in horror, knowing Beau's imminent fate. Just as Lee is about to reach his son, an extra-terrestrial bursts from the forest, slaughtering Beau.
In a word, this scene is perfect. After a couple of minutes, we know how this world works, understand the family's dynamic, and above all, are made aware to those who fail to keep quiet.
