Candyman is an iconic horror movie character so memorably brought to the screen with gravitas by Tony Todd. If you didn't spend some portion of your teen years believing he would appear behind you in the mirror if you said his name five times, then you haven't lived. The character was so iconic that Jordan Peele has thrown his weight behind an upcoming movie that features the character. This new movie has been labelled as a 'spiritual sequel' to the original, but did you know there was already a trilogy of movies to feature Candyman?

As was usually the case with successful horror movies in the 1990s, a standalone sequel to the first movie was released in 1995 called Candyman: Farewell To The Flesh. The movie did modest business, and was actually directed by Bill Condon (Beauty & the Beast, Twilight), but just wasn't as good. Transplanting the movie from Cabrini Green to New Orleans may have made sense on paper, but there was much more to be mined from staying in its original setting. Due to the success of the second movie, a third standalone entry formed a trilogy. Known as Candyman: Day of the Dead, the movie became a formulaic slasher of sorts with a supernatural killer. You'd be shocked to learn this third movie has a 4.0 on IMDb, and that was the end of Candyman, until 2021.
