10 Horror Movies You Never Knew Spawned A Trilogy

2. Re-Animator

In all honesty, it's incredibly disappointing that there are only three movies with Re-Animator in the title. The first movie by Stuart Gordon, who singlehandedly tried to bring H.P. Lovecraft to the movie masses, is an unforgettable horror that has been countlessly re-released on physical media since its release. The images of a severed head being held by its own body, ogling a young and very naked Barbara Crampton, are the stuff of nightmares. Yet because of the hilariously gory aesthetic you couldn't pull your eyes away. Jeffrey Combs' take on Herbert West as a delightfully entertaining mad scientist will forever live in the memory, and definitely deserved more screen time.

The world got just that a few years later thanks to Bride of Re-Animator, this time directed by Brian Yuzna, which continued the mischievous scientific hijinks of West as he brought countless monstrosities back to life with his luminous green serum. It's adored by horror fans, but fell short of captivating the general public in the same way its predecessor had. Then, out of nowhere, and a full 13 years later, Beyond Re-Animator arrived on DVD, forming an unlikely trilogy of movies. This entry into the series follows an imprisoned Herbert West still trying to conquer death within the walls of his penitentiary. This dumb fun sequel is worth a watch, even if it's just to see a fight between a rat and a re-animated severed penis. Though there were efforts to continue West's entertaining exploits, this franchise sadly remains a trilogy, and the world is a duller place because of it.
