10 Horror Movies You Really Wanted To Like (But Actually Couldn’t)
6. The First Purge & The Forever Purge
The Purge is set in a dystopian United States where the US government legalises crime for one night a year, hoping it'll maintain societal order in the long run.
Even though The Purge has a brilliant premise, the first entry mishandled it big time. The franchise had a tough road ahead, since sequels tend to get progressively worse.
Against the odds, the second instalment, The Purge: Anarchy, improved on the original in almost every way, offering a clever social commentary, intense pacing, and creative world-building. The Purge: Election Year focused on the behind-the-scene activities of this law, providing a fresh take for the evolving series.
Just when The Purge found its footing, it followed it up with, not one, but two duds. The First Purge relies on every horror cliche imaginable and is rife with heavy-handed messages. The Forever Purge was so formulaic, it seemed the filmmakers had exhausted all their best ideas.
Although it's frustrating to watch any IP go downhill, it was all the more disappointing for The Purge since it seemed to recover from the underwhelming original, only to plummet in quality soon after.
