10 Horror Movies You Really Wanted To Like (But Actually Couldn’t)
3. It Chapter 2
1990's IT has its cheesy moments, but that hasn't stopped the two-part mini-series developing a cult-following, thanks to Tim Curry's gleeful performance as Pennywise the Clown. Curry's depiction is so iconic, it was hard to imagine anyone else doing the role justice.
And yet, Bill Skarsgard knocked it out of the park in 2017's IT. Obviously, Skarsgard was the standout, but virtually every aspect of this adaptation was applauded, including the child actors, the creative visuals, and effective jump-scares. As a result, anticipation for the sequel was sky-high.
Unfortunately, IT Chapter 2 didn't come together. Though it was nice to see the young actors return, they had become noticeably older since the previous movie. The filmmakers tried disguising this fact by artificially de-aging the kids' voices, which was extremely distracting.
Although each of Pennywise's appearances in IT had a narrative purpose, there are times in the sequel where he's thrown in for the sake of it, sometimes killing a character with no connection to the ensemble.
Though IT found a balance between horror and humour, it's a bit messy this time around. While Pennywise vomits on Richie, Julie Newton's Angel in the Morning plays in the background, which comes across as jarring rather than funny.
And with a 169-minute run-time, it goes without saying that IT Chapter 2 is way too long.
IT was a triumph, but the sequel was a swing and a miss.
