The Movie

Actively marketed as a found footage snuff film, Cannibal Holocaust follows a film crew shooting a documentary about native cannibal tribes in the Amazon Rainforest and became one of the most controversial horror films in cinema history for its onscreen gore. Banned in around 40 countries, some of the movie’s nastiest imagery includes sexual violence, beheading and an impalement scene which some found so realistic that director Ruggero Deodato was taken to trial in Italy accused of murdering his cast.

Why You'll Never Watch it Again

It’s not so much the human gore in Cannibal Holocaust – which turned out to be simulated after all – that makes it so abhorrent, but several scenes of un-simulated animal cruelty that included the deaths of a coati, a turtle, a tarantula, a snake, a pig and two squirrel monkeys. RIP rainforest critters.

Simulated violence against human actors, however grisly and realistic, is pretty much expected of the horror genre but real animal torture is just a step too far. Those snuff movie accusations may have been disproven, but if you happened to be a turtle or a monkey on the set of the film it’s a different story.
